The problems

School uniforms are a compulsory piece of garment for all children in the United Kingdom up to Secondary School level. Unlike a ruler, or a calculator and other pieces of equipment, one size does not fit all. One uniform does not last the duration of a child’s time at school. This means, as a child grows, their uniforms do not grow with them; inevitably each uniform has a shelf life.

The question is, what does parents do with their children’s school uniforms:

  1. when their child has out-grown them, but it is still in good condition?
  2. when their child has completed year 11?
  3. if their child moves to a new school?
  4. your children do not have any siblings attending the same school so that the uniform can be passed on?

If any of the above applies to you, why not donate your uniform to “Recycle School Uniforms?”.

INSPIRATION

What inspired me to start a Recycle School Uniform project?  I struggled to buy uniforms for my four children every year and especially during the occasions when my children would lose their ties, rip their trousers or even out-grown their uniforms. This is a constant struggle until they have finished their school years.

The constant struggles with uniforms, as a single parent, lead me to believe I wasn’t the only one experiencing these struggles. If there was such an initiative as a second-hand school uniform shop/website to buy from, it would assist many single parents in my position.

With two teenagers growing up with no access to after school activities, it is a constant worry for me because I am not able to afford the cost of paid activities for my teenagers.  I believe access to a youth club could be the right solution for my teenagers and many others who are in the same predicament. Youth Clubs can offer them a better-quality of life after school with different social engagements

My Challenges:

  • Who will donate (many won’t just give something for nothing).
  • How to deliver and collect. (My plan is to work with schools, asking if parents could leave uniform donations with them to be collected). The best option would be free delivery.
  • Premises: I would start the operation from home. The stock would be put in my house until premises is found or youth clubs could offer me a little storage space.
  • Areas to work with: Westminster borough to start with, easy for me to travel.

VISION AND SOLUTION

At Recycle School Uniforms we will launder donated uniforms and re-sell at an affordable price to under-privileged families who may be struggling financially and are significantly disadvantage.A percentage of the funds generated from the re-sale will be donated to youth clubs in the Westminster locality first and across the country as the business become more successful to help with their regeneration of other Youth Clubs.Selling recycled school uniforms country-wide in the UK, will benefit your children from Reception to Sixth Form and can benefit parents and children from schools across the UK.I believe having a shop for recycled school uniforms would help many parents provide their children with the right uniform during school term at an affordable price.  This would be no different to other second hand shops around the country.Knowing that you are buying these recycled uniforms to benefit your needs, you are also contributing to the future safety of your children’s future in attending after school activities at a youth club rather than roaming the streets to be solicited by gang members.Collecting donated uniforms and re-selling them at an affordable price, the business will be able to make a profit to support local youth clubs where our children will be in a safe environment, socialising with their peers and developing useful social skills.I believe that we are failing our children especially in inner-city areas, which is leading them to look for heroes in the wrong places. We need to encourage our children and young people to recognise and understand their potential and acknowledge that all things are possible, with hard work and with the right attitude and support.Youth clubs offer a safe space for children and young people to increase confidence and learn how to positively contribute back to society. In areas of the country who are fortunate to have youth clubs, they play a vital role in keeping children and young people off the streets, supporting them to have more opportunities to succeed in life.Let’s work together to support our youth in this city and beyond. I truly believe that the children are our future, so we need to invest in them or our communities will not have a future.
